Leadership Development – Legacy’s approach

October 31, 2008

Leadership Development Legacys approach | action | Global Youth VillageLegacy’s approach to youth leadership development allows for all types of styles and skill levels.  For us, leadership is based upon the ability to respond to the time, place, and circumstances one finds oneself in.

The Global Youth Village environment encourages an attitude, an identity, a set of new skills and understandings that allow leadership to emerge from individuals.  Young people see the source of leadership coming from within rather than solely on public acknowledgment.  It becomes solidified, based on the confidence of “this is what I am” rather than upon the effort of “this is what I am trying to be.”  Our primary teaching method is experiential in a highly supportive environment.  In all aspects of GYV - workshops, action teams and cabin life individuals are  given opportunities. Young people are encouraged to try new things and develop teamwork skills.  Young people leave with

a)   Improved self-confidence, maturity; a positive outlook on life; renewed hope for the future

b)   Heightened commitment to active participation in the future of their communities

c)   Increased understanding of various cultures, global issues, and their interconnectedness

d)   Reinforced ability to respect people as individuals with unique strengths and weakness rather than to stereotype individuals by ethnic, national, racial or cultural prejudices and biases

e)   Increased self-discipline in setting, working towards, and achieving group and individual objectives

f)    Strengthened ability to organize and carry out community improvement projects successfully

g)   Enhanced ability to promote understanding among people

h)   Improved ability to find win-win solutions to interpersonal disputes and disagreements

i)    Acquired new perspectives on their own day to day dynamics

Action team raises funds for Oxfam

October 30, 2008

Action team raises funds for Oxfam | action | Global Youth VillageThe three young men from Palestine – Sameh, Ahmed and Adham, Christabel and Gift from Nigeria, and Catherine from Ghana were part of the Green Your World Action Team  in July 2008.  Every day at lunch, they would share facts about water conservation,  waste management and other helpful info.  Towards the end of the session, they spoke about world hunger and how many men, women and children die every day from malnutrion and hunger.  They provided a way for the Global Youth Vilage community to come together and make a small donatation towards ending hunger.  We raised $109 in one hour and donated it to Oxfam International.

Thanks team!!

Helping at a Habitat House

October 21, 2008

Helping at a Habitat House | leadership | Global Youth VillageOne day during the three week session, we split into teams and worked at different local Service projects. Some of us helped at Habitat for Humanity.  We learned about how people qualify for homes, how they give back -all while doing the  landscaping. Service projects  are a great way to get involved.  Some of my international friends gained ideas from the US non-profit models. Many hands make light work.
