Activity Coordinator
Job Description

 

 

General Responsibility:
Help monitor group dynamic and adjust programming accordingly. Work closely with admin team and fellow staff members to infuse the themes of teamwork, leadership, community into all campus activities (orientation days, closing days and evening and weekend programs). Coordinate the afternoon electives and recreational activities with staff so that youths can expereince new things and build friendships. Direct evening gathering and reflection time. Assist in delivery of evening and weekend programming. Maintain close communication with staff who deliver afternoon and special events.

Minimum Qualifications:
* College graduate with at least 2 years professional youth work and staff management experience, and at least 25 years of age
* Previous professional level administrative, programming or counseling experience with teens, preferably in a residential, camp setting.
* Previous experience developing and delivering training programs for adults.
* Ability to creatively schedule and plan programs.
* Demonstrates an understanding of the demands of working in a multi-cultural environment, and is able to apply Legacy's training principles in effective multi-cultural team building.
* Has proven team-leading experience. Able to effectively manage conflicts using a variety of communication styles.
* Ability to create a harmonious group dynamic within a variety of GYV group settings. Ability to manage large groups.
* Flexible and open to approaching youth work from a variety of methods.
* Ability to initiate communication with administrative staff concerning youth and staff needs.
* Proven ability to effectively accept & offer feedback.
* Thorough understanding of Legacy's leadership training model and cross-cultural sensitivity. Able to harmonize own personal style of instruction with Legacy's approaches.
* Ability to approach tasks creatively and to use existing circumstances as learning opportunities.
* Ability to take initiative and seek/accept guidance as needed.
* Enthusiastic and self-motivated, with high personal stamina. Good character, integrity, adaptability and self-reflective.
* Ability to inspire groups & individuals.
* Ability to observe staff facilitation techniques and their impact on the youths learning process.
* Possesses strength and endurance required to manage staff and youth in a rural, residential camp setting.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others
* Ability to establish work priorities, respond to unanticipated needs, & work under pressure.
* Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-control.
* Fluent in English.

Responsible To: Global Youth Village Director

Specific Responsibilities

During Staff Training (pre-program):
1. Gather information about staff talents, skills and specific areas of expertise; work with administrative team and special programs coordinator to develop potential afternoon electives, free time activities, evening and weekend events using staff resources
2. Develop rapport with staff who deliver daily afternoon activities and help them develop effective lesson plans as needed
3. Assist in the coordination of Staff Cultural sharing
4. Co-plan orientation activities and assist in preparing staff for their roles for Week One.

When program in session:
1. Facilitate an action team (13-15 youths) in an experiential learning model to develop skills in project planning, implementation, teamwork and leadership (approximately 5-6 hours per week)
2. On weekly basis, coordinate the offering of 8-10 electives. Youths sign up for one elective each week which is a 1.25 hour activity offered for 3-4 days. Activity choices include an array of arts, sports, beginning swimming, languages, dance, public speaking, team building, and leadership development. On a daily basis, observe the delivery of electives and offer advice and support to staff as needed.
3. On a daily basis, work with staff on free time offerings. These are 1.5 hour activities offered in late afternoon. Often youths come and go out of these activities. Examples include: DVD documentary and discussion, groups meet to plan an evening cultural focus, bracelet making, juggling, pool open, volleyball, basketball, ping-pong tournament, nature walk etc.
4. Coordinate gathering time every evening and promote recognition of achievements.
5. Daily meetings with various general and administrative staff to keep communications flowing.
6. Assist in physical set up or planning and deliveyr of evening and weekend special events
7. Assist in the coordination of Orientation day and closing reflection activities

Essential Functions:
1. Ability to effectively communicate with youths and staff, and to provide necessary instruction, feedback, and training.
2. Ability to observe youth behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide appropriate guidance and discipline.
3. Ability to communicate to staff and youths the safety regulations and emergency procedures in case of an all-camp emergency.
4. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to area.
5. Cognitive and communication abilities to manage large, complex event management.
6. Cognitive and communication abilities to manage complex tasks with large groups, to plan and conduct cabin unit activities, and coordinate counseling team.
7. Possesses strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of youth in a rural, residential camp setting.
8. Ability to operate essential office equipment needed to carry out responsibilities (i.e. telephone, computer, photocopy machine).
