Global
Youth Village cabin counselors are diverse in nationality, culture,
language ability, approaches to youth work, and communication styles.
Each cabin is home to 6-10 youths and 1 (sometimes 2) counselors. Cabin
life is at the foundation of creating an open and accepting environment
where individuals can feel secure and comfortable. It is after friendships
and trust are developed that participants feel confident to explore
sensitive issues with others in the Global Youth Village. The counseling
team works together to promote sensitivity to other cultures, encourage
personal development, and ensure safety. They provide role models of
service, cooperation, care, and respect. The counseling team consists
of the Youth Director and live-in cabin counselors.
Cabin
Counselors coordinate and carryout the various functions for
their cabin group: wake-up duties, cabin cleanliness, meal & health
monitoring, facilitating discussions, and more. Previous experience
as counselors with youth is preferred. Other important qualities include
an ability to assess and adjust group dynamics and handle numerous details
on a day-to-day basis.
All
counselors, in addition to tending to the needs of the cabin group,
fulfill one or more of the various programmatic, administrative or support
roles listed on the Program Specialists
page. Applicants for these program specialist roles should have the
knowledge required to plan and deliver activities within the specialty
area, and be able to readily teach their skill to a varied age group
(13 -18 year olds). Professional teaching experience is preferred but
not required.
