Giving
and serving is at the heart of the Global Youth Village. The program,
from its founding, was built by volunteer labor, with donated materials,
and through volunteers lending talents in a variety of ways, as counselors,
cooks, nurses, carpenters, artists and trainers. Each year, the Global
Youth Village attracts a number of people wishing to either volunteer
their talents or fulfill internship requirements towards degree programs.
Volunteering is an option for any person 20 years of age and older,
who meets the basic hiring criteria for the program.
An
application and interview is required for any volunteer applicant wishing
to participate for two or more weeks. If the volunteer is wishing to
come for a week or less, submitting a letter and resume will suffice
to begin the process.
People
wishing to volunteer are encouraged to express what they wish to contribute
and gain from their experience at the Global Youth Village. Our Staffing
Committee will then work with the volunteer applicant to determine the
most suitable role for the person, given these goals. Volunteers are
welcome to apply for any of the listed positions or a role can be tailored
for suitable candidates.
The
Global Youth Village provides volunteers with room, board and supplemental
training.
"There are many things I like
about work at Legacy. Creativity is the first. Everybody is inspired
to be creative, to bring out their hidden depths and skills. Inclusion
comes next. I admire the integrity of the environment to create a
gossip-free, clique-free experience, where people can express themselves
in direct, creative ways and where everyone feels accepted and valued.
I learned creative ways of helping
young people work as a team, explore issues regarding their immediate
society and the global society, which all came in handy in my college
teaching experience. By my GYV experience and by observing how it
is created, I have become more able to create such a classroom environment
myself and other teachers have also taken ideas and activities from
me, which made a positive contribution to the school."
