The Global Youth Village: An International Summer Camp Exchange Program for High School Students

Workshops & Travel Programs

Workshops happen every weekday morning. You will build skills needed for success in every community and business - empathy, time management, responsibility, goal setting, and the art of listening to other's perspectives. Workshops are NOT like going to school: they are fun and interactive! Learning happens naturally and easily through simulations, field trips, guest speakers, and discussions. Your instructors are professional teachers and trainers with international and community development experience.

Following the GYV session, travel to Washington, D.C. for an extraordinary opportunity to learn how our government operates.

DIALOGUE

Everyone has conflict: what you choose to do with it is the key. In this workshop, you learn peace-building skills and how to respond proactively to conflict and prejudice. Explore non-violence movements, how to lead discussions, and how to deal with anger -- your own and others'. Develop some listening skills, and master some conflict prevention and resolution techniques.

"I have accomplished the goal of being able to speak in a large group. I learned about dialogue and conflict resolution. Now I can go back home and resolve conflicts whether they are personal, family, or community conflicts. I can start to make change." Philip Kane, Northern Ireland

FAITH AND POLITICS

What is faith? What is politics? Historically, how have these two been intertwined or separated? Take a deep look at commonalities in faiths: social responsibility, egalitarianism, belief in a higher power, while simultaneously looking at the basis of international politics using modern and historical examples. Find examples of the compatibility of political goals and spiritual values of different faiths. Challenge your thinking, broaden your perspectives, and look for applications in your own daily life.

"GYV has been an incredible experience
for my son. By being immersed in different cultures,
he has really become more open-minded;
he is also more confident in his abilities."
Nathalie Sédack, Parent

MASS MEDIA & YOU

TV, radio, magazines - they are fighting for our attention every day. What techniques do they use and why? This workshop emphasizes the political, social, and economic implications of media messages and stresses the importance of using media effectively and wisely. You'll analyze existing media messages for their true "message" and create your own content. Explore ways in which a single story might be interpreted differently by people from different backgrounds. Develop an awareness of issues of credibility and bias in the media. Identify flawed beliefs about topics fostered by media content, which may include false or misleading information.

GLOBAL MUSIC

Are you a musician? Would you like to explore different musical styles and
traditions? Join us and learn to play and sing pieces from Arab, Turkish, and other Middle Eastern cultures. Our Artists-in-Residence are specialists in the music and instruments of these fascinating cultures: the oud, the saz, the qanun, and the tabla. Develop your skills in improvisation. Discuss what it means to be a musician in today's world, and how music can help to bridge cultures. To listen to a podcast of a workshop session from summer 2007, please visit http://shumays.libsyn.com.

"With Arabic music, the philosophy is all about people teaching people. It's much more of a human sounding music because it changes with who is playing and the various styles that are being used. It's much less rigid and conforming."

Sarah Willis, 16, classically trained violist, Virginia.

"After studying Arabic music, I now pay closer attention to my intonation in classical music."

Giulia Libertini, 15, classically trained cellist, Italy

GREEN YOUR WORLD

Explore the natural world and the complex issues facing our ecosystems around the world. Learn how to be a friend to the environment through changing your every day habits to incorporate sustainable living practices. Discover the meanings behind concepts like eco-tourism, permaculture, fair trade, green building, organic agriculture and renewable energy. Enjoy eco-walks, see how the internet is a tool for information and activism. Watch a variety of fascinating documentaries and devise action plans for yourself, family, and school.

ARABIC LANGUAGE & CULTURE

Did you know that Arabic is the language of more than 250 million people in more than 20 countries, stretching from Morocco and Mauritania in North Africa through the Middle East and Gulf States? Have you ever wished you knew more about the cultural traditions of these exotic places? Would you like a more intensive jumpstart to learning this language? This workshop will provide 25 hours basic level instruction in Modern Standard Arabic, and in addition, give you the flavor of Arabic culture around the world. Language and culture are inseparable; together they impact every social and ethical norm and are intertwined with the values and ideals by which a society identifies itself. Stimulate your interest and open up new career and study opportunities.
