The Global Youth Village is an international youth camp that has been operated by Legacy International since 1979. Legacy International is a non-profit, educational organization affiliated with the United Nation’s Department of Public Information as a Non-Governmental organization. The Global Youth Village has been an ongoing project since Legacy’s founding, and more than 3500 alumni circle the globe. GYV’s history and accomplishments: In its 30 years, Legacy’s youth programs have provided training and hope at critical moments in history. We have hosted youths from 102 countries. Program support comes from foundations, individuals, corporations and US Department of State.
- 1979 – Global Youth Village Launched!
- 1983-1990 -Special dialogue initiatives involving Israeli, Palestinian, Lebanese, Cambodian, Vietnamese and Northern Irish youths
- 1987 – Mediterranean Youth Conference -youths from 11 countries work together to solve environmental problems. Youths For Environment and Service is started.
- 1991-2000 Following break up of Soviet Union, 175 youths from Central Asia and Balkans attend GYV sponsored by Soros Foundation, Open Society Institute
- 1993-1995 Leadership Curriculum implemented in 53 New York City diocesan schools and public schools
- 1996-2000 Merrill Lynch Scholarship Builders program sponsors youths to GYV
- 2001 – Tolerance training for Georgian and Abkhazian children post civil war supported by the Academy for Educational Development
- 2003-2005 Youth Leadership Training for Bosnia-Herzegovina sponsored by US Department of State
- 2004-present Youth Leadership Programs and Exchanges – Indonesia sponsored by US Department of State
- 2007-present Iraqi Youth Leadership Exchange Program sponsored by US Department of State
